چکیده

We construct a model of referral hiring to examine the effects of social network structure on group level inequality. Our study departs from many studies of social networks and labor market outcomes in that we focus on groups and not on individuals. We find that more random social networks yield higher employment rates than less random social networks if the population is integrated or information flows about job vacancies are random. However if the population is highly segregated and information flows about job vacancies are nonrandom then less random social networks have higher employment rates than more random social networks. This second finding holds because non-random social networks allow a group to better contain job information inside the group when a population is segregated. We also study the robustness of this finding with respect to the size of minority and majority groups and the amount of social segregation. JEL Classification: J15, J18, J78

Social Network Structure, Equality and Segregation in a Labor Market with Referral Hiring

We construct an agent-based model to examine the effects of referral based hiring and of the structure of social networks on three labor market phenomena: the steady state level of equality between groups, measures of segregation at steady state, and the rate of convergence to steady state. When firms hire by referral the relative structure of social networks in majority and minority groups det...

Random or Referral Hiring: When Social Connections Matter

Random or Referral Hiring: When Social Connections Matter This study investigates the existence of hiring criteria associated with the degree of social connections between skill and low-skill workers. We provide evidence about to what extent managers rely on their social connections in recruiting low-skill workers rather than on random matching. As one unique feature we follow an approach for a...

Referral Hiring and Gender Segregation in the Workplace

Segregation by type of work or discrimination are two common explanations for gender segregation in the workplace. Here, I discuss a third: gender segregation may occur because of referral hiring through segregated social networks. I examine data on the inter-firm gender segregation of employees at US colleges and universities. Using a combination of analytical modeling, empirical estimation, a...

Modelling the Emergence and Dynamics of Social and Workplace Segregation∗

The relationship between social segregation and workplace segregation has been traditionally studied as a one-way causal relationship mediated by referral hiring. In this paper we introduce an alternative framework which describes the dynamic relationships between social segregation, workplace segregation, individuals’ homophily levels, and referral hiring. An agent-based simulation model was d...
